How to make a Mood Board for your Home
Set your aim… so you can work towards it
This mood board will help you to make your design & decorating decisions, while staying in alignment with your ideal overall vision & aesthetic.
Start by collecting images that you love, and that inspire you.
You can do this by cutting out physical magazines, or you can do it digitally by saving a collection of images to a folder, or by using a tool like Houzz to make an ‘ideabook’ or Pinterest to make a ‘board’ for your project.
Once you have your collection of inspiration images, take a step back and notice what - if anything - they have in common. Are there repeating colours, tones, textures, shapes, lines, lighting, materials etc? What feelings do your images evoke in you? Are there specific features in your images that you love & want to recreate?
If your inspiration images are a blend of multiple styles, could you pick one style to stick to, so that your overall goal aesthetic is cohesive? {Of course, an exception - or complication - may be that you are aiming for an ‘eclectic’ style, or you are intentionally hoping to have each room feel different… Even so, there are ways to tie the overall styling of your home together with certain consistencies.}
Can you name the design style you are aiming for? If you’re not sure, do some research on interior design & decorating styles.
If there are features you are certain you want in your home, or a certain item you know you want your design to work with, that may be your guidepost for determining the other details.
Once your style and overall theme is decided, you can pull together a collection of finishes, details, materials, colours & textures that you want to use as the ‘palette’ to select from for your home.
